ALTOONA, Wis. – The No. 25 Gustavus men's golf team wrapped up competition at the Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational, hosted by UW-Eau Claire. The Gustie "A" team took fifth of 18 (303-300-603), while the second Gustie team finished ninth (313-318-631). Nebraska Wesleyan won the tournament with a two-round 590, while host UW-Eau Claire claimed second and third with a 592. Individually, UWEC's Corey Boerner took first, with a one-over 143.
Teddy Kaste (Sr., Apple Valley) continued to lead the team, finishing tied for sixth on the weekend. Kaste carded a four-over 73-73-146. After totaling a pair of birdies in round one, Kaste added five more to his performance for the weekend. Behind Kaste was
Chris Gutuza (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa), who shot a two round 152. Gutuza added a pair of birdies Monday for a round two 75, helping him move up seven spots on the leaderboard.
Wyatt Carlson (Jr., Wayzata) shared 16th with his teammate, after carding an identical 77-75-152. First-year
Jimmy Abdo (Edina) took 24th (154), and
Tommy Hiniker (5th, Edina) rounded out the Gustie first team with a two round 156 for 33rd.
"All in all we had a good experience at the Eau Claire tournament," exclaimed senior captain Kaste. "We fell a little short of where we wanted finishing fifth but we were really close to winning if we could've found a few more shots. The Eau Claire guys definitely used playing on their home course to their advantage. I had a wild round today, starting extremely poorly, but finishing extremely well to get sixth. We are hoping to build on this tournament, work on our games, and come in strong to the Williams Invite in Massachusetts next weekend."
Blake Forrest (So., Maple Grove) was the highlight of the Gustie "B" team, as the sophomore carded a two round 151 to tie for 11th.
Jack Reinardy (Sr., Andover) took 20th with a 77-76-153, getting a trio of birdies on day two.
Pelayo Perez Crespo (Jr., Sotogrande, Spain) and
Aradheea Gawade (Fy., Mumbai, India) tied for 66th with a two round 163, while
Khrystjan Petersen (5th, Faribault) finished with a 164 on the weekend and
Cameron Longie (Sr., Hutchinson) carded a 175.
For the Gustie individuals,
Caleb McBee (Sr., Glendale, Ariz.) led the way, carding a 159 for 48th, while
Cole Paulson (Jr., Sauk Rapids) shot a 175 and
Tomas Rohrborn (Sr., Santiago, Chile) finished with a 185.
"We are inching our way closer, unfortunately it's not as fast as we would like," said Head Coach
Scott Moe. "We still had a few too many mistakes that led to doubles or a triple. Teddy got off to a rough start, but I give him all the credit in the world for staying on track and battling to a sixth place finish in a very strong field. Our whole team needs to continue to have that focus and that fight for all 18 holes. When we do that, we are an elite team. We're looking forward to our opportunity to travel to Williams this weekend for one of the best golf courses in the country and a very deep field. Coming off a third place finish their last year, I like our chances."
The Gusties will compete in the Williams Invitational in Williamstown, Mass. Saturday and Sunday at Taconic Country Club before returning home to host the annual Twin Cities Classic the weekend after.
