ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Gustavus women's soccer team (3-2-2, 0-2 MIAC) dropped its second consecutive 1-0 MIAC game Saturday, falling to Macalester (3-2-2, 1-0-1 MIAC) on a late goal scored in minute 85. The Gusties dominated much of the play, but struggled to put one past Scot goalkeeper Abigail Heuga.
Both teams played scoreless in the first half, but each had their fair share of chances on offense. At minute 27, MIAC Athlete of the Week
Katelyn Olson (So., Cloquet) made another impressive save for the week, punching one of the Scots' best shot attempts over the crossbar.
Cambelle Waldspurger (Jr., Mahtomedi) added one of her many chances for the day shortly after, but her attempt barely went off target. Macalester sent a last-second cross toward Olson at the end of the half, but it never made its way toward the goal, as both teams headed into the break scoreless.
The Gusties hit their offensive stride in the second 45, getting one of their best attempts 15 minutes into the half thanks to the efforts of the duo of
Haillee Wilson (Jr., Ashland, Wis.) and Waldspurger. Wilson sent a long pass to Waldspurger, who beat the Macalester defender in a footrace, but needed half of a second more to get to the ball before Heuga, who collected it before Waldspurger could get a full shot off.
Just two minutes later,
Lillian Selberg (Sr., Minneapolis) launched a shot off the crossbar, leaving a perfect rebound for
Hannah Cisar (Jr., Sioux Falls), who missed her shot just high over the goal of Heuga. Macalester broke the deadlock with just five minutes left in the game, as Erica Hamilton broke through the Gustie defense and chipped a bouncing ball over the hands of Olson into the top left corner. The Gusties did their best once again to come up with a late goal, but the Scot defense proved worthy, earning their first conference win of the season over the Gusties.
Gustavus out-shot Macalester 12-5, but only one of the attempts made its way on the Macalester goal. Waldspurger led the offensive charge with a trio of shots, while
Ellen Becken (Sr., Prior Lake) chipped in a pair of her own to the total.
The Gusties hit the road on Wednesday, making the trek to Winona for a MIAC match-up against Saint Mary's at 4 p.m.
