LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Gustavus gymnastics team faced UW-La Crosse for the second time in as many weekends, falling to the league-leading Eagles 192.150-185.675 on Friday, Jan. 31 at Mitchell Hall Gymnasium.
The Gusties (1-6, 1-4 WIAC) posted a season-high 45.725 on the uneven bars in the first rotation, a 47.125 on the vault, a 47.050 on the floor exercise, and a 45.775 on the balance beam for a season-high 185.675 on the night, their best team score of the season.
In the first rotation, the Gusties were led by the performance of
Maddox Lee (Jr., Hugo, Minn.), who posted a season- and team-high 9.550 on the uneven bars for fifth overall.
Lili Guy (Sr., Glendale Heights, Ill.) and
Lily Horsch (Sr., Somonauk, Ill.) followed their teammate, tying for seventh with a 9.225, both season-highs for the seniors.
Marley Michaud (Sr., Sartell, Minn.) added a ninth place finish with an 8.900, also a season-high. First-year
Kate Clairmont (Grand Rapids, Minn.) rounded out the group with her own season- and career-best, an 8.825 for 10th overall.
The team took to the vault in the second rotation, led by the performance of Guy, who collected a 9.575 to tie for third overall. Horsch added a season-best 9.525 for fifth, while
Cara Wong (Fy., Sacramento, Calif.) took eighth with a 9.400. UWL's Grace Kehr won the event with a 9.725, while two other Eagles finished second and third.
On the floor exercise, Guy led the squad once more, collecting a 9.500 for sixth overall.
Olivia Jahnke (Sr., Hanover, Minn.) was next, posting a 9.450, followed by Wong's 9.400 for seventh and eighth, respectively. Michaud added a 9.375 for ninth overall.The top five spots were claimed by the host Eagles (5-0, 5-0 WIAC), including a three-way 9.700 tie for first.
The Gusties wrapped things up on the beam, led by a 9.650 for Lee, good for third overall and her best mark of the season thus far. In just her second collegiate beam performance, Claremont added a 9.450 for eighth overall. Jahnke was next with an even 9.000, followed by Wong's 8.850 and Bangs' 8.825.
Wong finished the night with a 35.950 for first in the all-around competition.
After four weekends on the road, the Gusties finally return home to the Sponberg Gymnastics Studio, hosting UW-Whitewater for a 1 p.m. WIAC dual on Saturday, Feb. 8.
