Gymnastics Opens Season with Victory Over UW-Eau Claire

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus gymnastics team opened the season in a dual against UW-Eau Claire Saturday night at the Sponberg Gymnastics Studio, and walked away with its first win of the season in the first Gustavus home event of 2025. The Gusties out-scored UWEC (0-1 overall) in every rotation and collected four individual first-place finishes to defeat the BlugoldsĀ 184.225-181.825.

The Gusties began the meet on the vault in rotation one, scoring a 47.075 as a team. Lili Guy (Sr., Glendale, Ill.) led the team and posted a meet-high 9.600 on her vault for first overall, while Lily Horsch (Sr., Somonauk, Ill.) claimed second with a 9.450. Cara Wong (Fy., Sacramento, Calif.) competing in her first collegiate event and meet, scored a 9.425 to tie for fourth. Fellow first-year Kate Clairmont (Grand Rapids, Minn.) took seventh alongside teammate Marley Michaud (Sr., Sartell, Minn.), each with a 9.300. Guy's 9.600 tied for the highest score in any event on Saturday, and was a career-high for the senior.Ā 

In the second rotation, Gustavus claimed a team score of 44.000 to better UWEC's 43.300 on the uneven bars. Maddox Lee (Jr., Hugo, Minn.) was the highest finisher for the Gusties, collecting a 9.275 for second overall. Wong added a 9.075, while Guy posted a 9.025 for fourth and fifth, respectively. Michaud added an 8.450 for seventh, while Horsch finished 10th with an 8.175. Eau Claire's Harriet Toth scored a 9.350 on the bars for the top score of the day in the event.Ā 

On the beam in the third rotation, Lee picked up right where she left off in the year before, scoring a 9.600 for first overall. Lee owns the top-three beam scores in program history, and has collected a 9.600 or better six times in her collegiate career. Olivia Jahnke (Sr., Hanover, Minn.) added a 9.200 for fourth, while Adi Dack (Sr., Northfield, Minn.), Michaud, Clairmont, and Lindsay Bangs (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.), finished sixth through ninth, with Michaud and Clairmont sharing seventh. Dack collected a 9.150, followed by Michaud and Clairmont (9.100), while Bangs added a 9.075 to contribute to a team total of 46.125.Ā 

Leading 137.200-136.700 heading into the final rotation, Jahnke, Lee, Michaud, and Bangs led the team to victory on the floor exercise, each scoring a 9.425 or better. Lee and Jahnke shared the top spot with UWEC's Toth with a 9.500. Michaud added a 9.450, while Bangs picked up a 9.425 to round out the event's top-five performers. Bangs' performance was a career-high for the senior, helping the Gusties total a 47.025 on floor compared to a 46.675 for the Blugolds.Ā 

Eau Claire's Toth claimed the all-around title with a 37.300, followed by Michaud with a 36.200 and Wong with a 35.825.Ā 

The Gusties (1-0 overall) hit the road for their next four meets, starting with a WIAC dual against the reigning national champions UW-Oshkosh before heading to Providence, R.I. the following week for a triangular with Rhode Island College and Utica.Ā
