SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men's soccer team sent off their six seniors in style on Sunday, October 26th, with a 1-0 win over UW-Superior. This win improved the all-time record against the Yellowjackets to 5-0-0 across all competitions.
The Gusties dominated most of the first half, registering five shots and forcing five corner kicks to set up opportunities, but nothing found the back of the net. The best chance of the half came for UW-Superior, though, when a shot from distance got past sophomore goalkeeper
Jackson Baker (Excelsior, Minn.) but hit the crossbar to maintain the deadlock heading into halftime.
In the second half, a miscue by a Yellowjacket center back set up the goal for the Gusties.
Kieran Mahan (Fy., Wayzata, Minn.) applied pressure and forced a poor pass that he caught up to and slotted it across the penalty area to
Jack Isroff (Jr., Valparaiso, Ill.), who tapped it in. For the rest of the half, the result was never in question, with the Gusties managing pressure from UW-Superior, seeing the game out.
Baker was forced to make three saves for the Gusties throughout the match in the shutout, the second complete shutout of his career at Gustavus. The team also celebrated senior day, celebrating
Dylan Ehlers (Eden Prairie, Minn.),
Mason Gilliand (Minneapolis, Minn.),
Sam Katan (Minneapolis, Minn.),
Micah Lesch (Minneapolis, Minn.),
Rivaldo Pena (Rochester, Minn.), and
Spencer Skjeldestad (Sogndal, Norway).
The Gustavus men's soccer team is back in action on Tuesday, October 28th at 3:30, when they travel to Grinnell College to close out their non-conference schedule.
