MOORHEAD, Minn. – The No. 23 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College volleyball team battled the Concordia College Cobbers on the road Saturday afternoon in a conference contest. The Gusties swept the Cobbers 3-0 to improve to 20-5 overall and 6-1 in the MIAC.
The two teams battled neck and neck in the opening set. With the Cobbers leading 18-17, Gustavus went on a 4-0 run to take a 21-18 lead. Concordia battled back to pull within one down 22-21 and then 23-22, but the Gusties won the final two points to take the first set 25-22.
In set two, Gustavus trailed 14-13 until a four-point run put them up 17-14. Concordia then won four in a row themselves to retake a lead up 18-17. The Cobbers worked their way to reach set point up 24-22, but the Gusties rallied to win four consecutive points to take the set 26-24.
The final set was closely contested until the final stretch. Gustavus led by one up 19-18 and then went on a 6-1 run to close out the set 25-19 and clinch the three-set sweep over Concordia.
Leah Berg led the Gusties' attack with 13 kills on .333 hitting.
Sydney Timm had an 11-kill, 11 dig double-double.
Sahara Morken orchestrated the offense with 37 assists for an average of 12.33 assists per set.
Maren Sundberg led the defensive effort with 19 digs.
Up next for the Gusties is a return to Saint Peter for a home match against the St. Scholastica Saints on Friday, October 31 at 7:00 p.m.
