NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Gustavus men's and women's track & field teams competed at the Meet of the Hearts, hosted by Carleton, on Saturday, and highlighted the meet with multiple season bests and top finishes. The Gusties competed against eight other teams.
Â
On the track, the women were led by
Kate Carlson's first places finishes in the 55-meter and 200-meter. Carlson ran a personal best and tied the 55-meter school record with a time of 7.31. Carlson also won the 200-meter with a 25.63, establishing a new meet record.
Â
The Gusties dominated the 55-hurdles with four top finishes, including
Laura Thauvin with a winning time of 8.86. In the mile,
Sydney Hagen placed second with a personal best of 5:23.95.
Isabel Fynboh crossed the finish line in 1:47.02 in the 600-meter.
Â
The gold jerseys outshone in the field. To no surprise,
Alli Graff vaulted to another first place finish this season with a lifetime best of 11-4.50. Also in the pole vault,
Lillian Selberg vaulted 9-3 for a new personal best. First-year Kiera McCord set a new season-best in shot-put with a throw of 36-7.
Rebecca Hoffman took second in the weight-throw with a mark of 44-10.25.
Â
"The throwers are starting to make a move as the conference meet nears," said throws coach
Tom Thorkelson. "The weight throw had PRs by every thrower – Keira Mccord, Becca Hoffman,
Jake Widdes,
Connor Purvis, and
Zack Stordahl who garnered a second place finish. Widdes and McCord both PR'd in the shot put as we look to start our peaking for the conference indoor meet."
Â
Connor Purvis placed fifth in weight throw in his first ever collegiate meet with a mark of 39-10.50. First-year
Kyler Flunker jumped 5-10 in the high jump.
Isaiah Subah and
Liam Frommelt both posted season bests in the long jump with marks of 21-00 and 20-10.
Â
On the men's track, the distance races paved the way. Senior
Tyler Smith ran a personal record in the mile of 4:17.62, just shy of the school record. Six other Gusties ran personal and season best in the mile.
Tyler Smith (2:34.52), Nicholas Brauer (2:40.28), and
Henry Landsem (2:41.80) swept the top three in the 1000-meter.
Niko Vargas and
Zechariah Kyoore ran 6.72 and 6.76 in the 55-meter respectively. First-years Connor Marten and Simon Lippert go 23.39 and 23.42 in the 200-meter.
Gustavus next competes at the MSU-Mankato Maverick Premier #1 on Friday.Â
