McCormick and Anderson Compete In Heptathlon Thursday

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - After day one of the heptathlon, Gustie senior Connor McCormick (Stillwater, Minn.) sits in fourth place, while first-year Amos Anderson (Mankato, Minn.) sits in 10th in his first MIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Carleton. 

Starting off the day was the 55-meter, where McCormick finished fifth with a time of 6.82 to earn 769 points, just a tenth of a second out of second place and one hundredth out of fourth place. In addition to the heptathlon, this was one of two events where McCormick qualified for the individual event, slated for a lane three position in the third heat of the 55-meter on Friday afternoon.  As for Anderson, he finished 12th with a time of 6.98 to earn 713 points after the first event. 

In the long jump, both Gusties moved their positioning up, finishing third and seventh in the event. McCormick had the third-furthest leap in the long jump, scoring 628 points with a 6.19m mark, while Anderson moved from 12th to ninth with a seventh place finish at 5.91m. 

The third event of seven was the shotput, where both Gusties fell, finishing in 13th and 15th place. Anderson led this time in 13th with a heave of 9.41m while McCormick garnered a 8.88m mark to move down to sixth overall. 

In the final event of the day, the high jump, McCormick shined, eclipsing the second highest mark, a 1.80m to move two spots up into fourth with a day-total of 2443 points. Anderson, who qualified for the triple jump as an individual, got 10th in the high jump at 1.65m to stay steady in 10th place with a point total of 2234. 

The heptathlon continues tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with the 55-meter hurdles, followed by the pole vault and the 1000m to round off the competition.
