WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Gustavus softball team concluded its annual spring trip to Florida on Friday, March 7, splitting a pair of games against Elizabethtown (Pa.) and Moravian (Pa.). The Gusties defeated Elizabethtown 6-0 before falling to Moravian 9-1 in six innings.
Gustavus 6, Elizabethtown 0
The Gustavus softball team opened Friday's slate of games with a 6-0 win over Elizabethtown (2-5 overall) in the early morning slot for the team's eighth win of the season and third in Florida.
The Gusties scored two in the first inning, one in the third, and three in the sixth in a 12-hit performance to claim the victory over the Blue Jays.
Kayla Herda (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) scored the first of the game off an error, followed by an RBI single to left center from
Lauren Lambert (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) for the 2-0 advantage. Lambert doubled to right center in the third to score
Carly Olson (So., Luverne, Minn.), who reached base via a walk.
The three-run sixth inning featured four hits, including four consecutive singles to open the frame, followed by a pair of sacrifice flies from
Greta Dahlen (Sr., West Des Moines, Iowa) and
Caitlin Olafsson (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) to bring in the final runs of the game.
Herda, Olson, and Lambert each totaled two hits apiece, while six others accounted for the remainder of the team's 12.
Ava Hamsund (So., Winona, Minn.) pitched a six inning shutout for the win, allowing just one hit while striking out three batters without a single walk in 19 at-bats.
Gustavus 1, Moravian 9 (6 inn.)
Gustavus allowed nine runs on nine hits and three errors in a 9-1 loss to Moravian (6-1 overall). The Greyhounds used a four-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach, while the Gusties managed just one in the first before five innings of scoreless play.
A single to center field scored Moravian's first two runs in the first inning, but Dahlen cut the lead in half, scoring on a fielder's choice RBI from Olafsson.
The Greyhounds re-extended the lead with a run on an error in the third, followed by three on singles in the fifth. The seventh run came off a wild pitch to cap the five-run inning. The Greyhounds wrapped things up with a two-RBI single through the right side for the 9-1 final.
Five different Gusties accounted for the team's five hits, while
Maizie Anderson (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) and
Hailey Petzel (Fy., Mankato, Minn.) split time in the circle. Anderson allowed seven runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work with four strikeouts, while Petzel allowed two on one hit and struckout one batter to close the game out.
The Gusties (8-8 overall) return to Minnesota to wrap up their non-conference schedule with a doubleheader at Bethany Lutheran (9-5 overall) on Friday, March 14.
