No. 35 Women’s Tennis Plays Perfect Four-Match Day

SAINT PETER, Minn. – No. 35 Gustavus women's tennis concluded its non-conference schedule and remained undefeated in MIAC play in four different matches played on Sunday, April 13. The Gusties (19-7, 5-0 MIAC) won all four without dropping a set, claiming four wins in a day for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The Gusties played six matches on March 6, 2010, winning five.

Gustavus 9, St. Olaf 0

Match one began Sunday morning in Saint Peter, as the Gusties hosted St. Olaf (9-3, 6-3 MIAC), which was undefeated on the season until its previous three matches. The Gusties swept the Oles in straight sets in each match in the win.

In doubles play, Karina Elvestrom (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Kaya De Bruijn (Jr., Maasland, Netherlands) won the first match of the day at No. 1 doubles, 8-1. Iowa natives Ella De Young (So., Iowa City) and Allison Szalay (Jr., Des Moines) claimed an 8-4 win at No. 2, while Molly Austin (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.) and Lanie Davis (Fy., St. Louis, Mo.) finished the first doubles sweep of the day with an 8-5 victory. 

In singles play, Brooke Haddorff (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) was convincing at No. 6, making quick work of the Oles' Sloane, 6-0, 6-1. De Bruijn claimed a nearly identical win at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0. Austin won at No. 3 by identical scores of 6-1, while Szalay posted a pair of 6-2 victories at No. 4. Elvestrom, who battled back after being down to start her first set, finished 6-3 and 6-2 over St. Olaf's No. 1, while Davis completed the sweep 6-3 and 6-4 at No. 5.

Gustavus 9, Saint Benedict 0

The Gusties cruised past Saint Benedict (5-8, 2-5 MIAC) handedly, finishing match two at the Brown Outdoor Courts in under two hours, 9-0. 

Elvestrom and De Bruijn won 8-2 at No. 1, while the No. 2 pair of Austin and Szalay won 8-1. Haddorff and Pavla Yakimova (Jr., Glasgow, Scotland) finished the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3. 

Szalay battled at the No. 4 singles in the only match played with more than two Bennie game victories. The junior won 6-1 in set one, followed by a 7-6 (7-0) win in set two that eventually sealed the perfect day for the Gusties. 

Austin made quick work of No. 3, winning by a pair of 6-0 scores. Both Haddorff (No. 5) and De Young (No. 6) went 6-0 and 6-1, while De Bruijn won by a pair of 6-1 scores. Elvestrom claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win over CSB's Sophia Jonas to win at No. 1 and extend her streak to four and MIAC record to 3-0.

Gustavus 7, UW-River Falls 0

The split squad began competition in Menomonie against River Falls (6-11, 1-5 WIAC), claiming a 7-0 win against the Falcons. 

The Gusties earned the doubles point, winning 6-0 at No. 2 to start thanks to the efforts of Madison Packer (Jr., Wadena, Minn.) and Rika Cross (Fy., Hemet, Calif.). The pairs of Maya Brakhage (Fy., Boulder, Colo.) and Noor Omar (Fy., Fridley, Minn.) and Ashley Strobel (Jr., Maplewood, Minn.) and Annie Klemmensen (So., Edina, Minn.) each won 6-1 at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.

Bethany Smith (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) claimed the first win in the singles at No. 6 by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Omar picked up a pair of 6-1 wins, while Strobel won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5. Brakhage added a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2, with Packer cruising to a No. 3 victory of 6-2, 6-3. Cross closed things out with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4.

Gustavus 7, UW-Stout 0

The Gusties completed the day against the Blue Devils (4-16, 0-6 WIAC), finishing their non-conference schedule for the season with another 7-0 victory.

The doubles teams of Omar/Brakhage and Cross/Klemmensen each swept their opponent 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Packer and Smith collected a 6-1 win at No. 2 to finish the perfect doubles day, which saw the Gusties go 84-20 in game scoring throughout all four matches.

Smith took care of No. 4 singles with two 6-0 wins, while Omar and Veranique Poquette (So., Champlin, Minn.) each won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 6 singles. Klemmensen won by two scores of 6-1, with Brakhage winning 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2. Stroebel ended the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3. 

Gustavus ends the regular season with five consecutive road MIAC matches in the next two weeks. The Gusties travel to St. Paul next weekend for matches against Hamline (10-5, 2-3 MIAC) and Macalester (3-10, 1-4 MIAC) on Friday, April 18.
