ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Gustavus softball team dropped a pair of MIAC decisions to Macalester Wednesday, April 16, in St. Paul. An early lead faded in game one, as the Scots (20-9, 7-4 MIAC) tacked on nine unanswered for the first win of the day, and held the Gusties (17-13, 7-5 MIAC) scoreless in a 4-0 game two.
Gustavus 3, Macalester 9
After a
Kayla Herda (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) lead-off hit to center in the first inning, the Gusties took advantage of three free passes to score a trio of runs in the first inning.
Caitlin Olafsson (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.), who ended 3-for-3 in game one, singled up the middle to put the Gusties up 2-0, while Paige Griztmaker (Fy., Woodbury, Minn.) flew out to right field to score the final Gustavus run of the day.
Macalester added one in the bottom half of the opening frame on an RBI single, but took the lead in the subsequent inning, scoring four off six hits, two of which were doubles, and a Gustie error. MAC added one in the fourth and three in the fifth off four hits to extend the lead and end the game 9-3 in favor of the home team.
Olafsson capitalized on all of her opportunities at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with an RBI. Herda and
Greta Dahlen (Sr., West Des Moines, Iowa) contributed the other two Gustie hits.
Ava Hamsund (So., Winona, Minn.) collected the two-inning loss, allowing five runs on nine hits.
Hailey Petzel (Fy., Mankato, Minn.) allowed four runs, three earned, off five hits in four innings.

Macalester took the early lead in game two, scoring a trio of runs in the first inning. The Scots singled in three consecutive at-bats, and scored two more on a single to
Maizie Anderson (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.), who earned the six-inning loss.
Macalester scored one more in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to center field.
Macalester's Tess Bojorquez pitched the seven-inning shutout, allowing just four hits off the Gustie bats in game two. She struck out two batters and allowed just two free passes. All four Gustie hits in game two came from different players, while Anderson allowed four runs, all earned, on 10 hits. The junior righty struck out seven batters.
The Gusties host St. Scholastica (7-19, 3-7 MIAC) next for a MIAC doubleheader and Senior Day in Saint Peter Saturday, April 19.
