No. 23 Women’s Tennis Wins MIAC Title With Undefeated League Record

DULUTH, Minn. – The Gustavus women's tennis team claimed the 2025 MIAC Women's Tennis Regular Season Championship outright on Sunday, April 27, completing the conference season undefeated with a perfect 10-0 mark with a 9-0 win over St. Scholastica.

The unblemished record marks the 29th time the Gusties (24-7, 10-0 MIAC) have gone without a loss in the MIAC and the 25th for head coach Jon Carlson '88, who earned his 50th regular season title and 25th with the women's tennis program.

Carlson, who has won 25 with the Gustavus swimming & diving teams (13 men, 12 women), ranks second among MIAC coaches all-time for the most championships won, and first among both active MIAC coaches and all-time coaches at current institutions. Only St. Thomas' Joe Sweeney has more in his career, with 85 between the Tommie men's and women's cross country and track & field teams (indoor and outdoor).

The Gusties concluded the regular season undefeated in MIAC doubles play, earning one last sweep over the Saints (11-7, 5-5 MIAC) on Sunday. Molly Austin (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.) and Lanie Davis (Fy., St. Louis, Mo.) won the first match of the day, cruising 8-1 at No. 2. Karina Elvestrom (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Kaya De Bruijn (Jr., Maasland, Netherlands) won 8-5 at No. 1, while the duo of Brooke Haddorff (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) and Pavla Yakimova (Jr., Glasgow, Scotland) claimed an 8-7 (14-12) victory at No. 3.

In singles play, Austin made quick work of her opponent at No. 3, finishing the regular season with an undefeated 9-0 MIAC singles record. The junior won 6-1, 6-0 in a match that lasted under 45 minutes. Her doubles partner Davis won by a pair of 6-2 scores at No. 4, while De Bruijn claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2.

Elvestrom picked up her 12th dual match win at No. 1 singles, a 6-1, 6-3 decision for the first-year. Noor Omar (Fy., Fridley, Minn.) added a pair of 6-1 wins at No. 5, while Allison Szalay (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa) completed the sweep with a 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) victory at No. 6.

The championship is the first for the team since the 2021-22 season, and awards the Gusties the No. 1 seed in the MIAC Women's Tennis Playoffs, set to begin Wednesday, April 30. Gustavus will host a semifinal match and the lowest remaining seed on Friday, May 2 at 3:30 p.m. in Saint Peter. The championship will be played at the site of the highest remaining seed.
