Full Release

SAINT PETER, Minn. – First-year golfer Jimmy Abdo (Edina, Minn.) was selected as the Gustavus Male Newcomer of the Year when the annual department awards were announced on Wednesday, June 11.

Abdo is the second golfer to claim the award in the last three seasons, joining teammate and now junior Chris Gutuza (Johannesburg, South Africa/Bishops Diocesan College) who earned the award in 2022-23.

The honor is annually voted on by head coaches following the conclusion of the athletic season, and given based on the individual athletic achievements of the year.

Abdo became the ninth Gustie to be selected as the MIAC Men's Golf Rookie of the Year, peaking in the spring and leading Gustavus to a pair of tournament wins to end 2024-25 season. Abdo averaged 75.3 in 22 rounds – the third best mark on the team – to earn the first All-MIAC honor of his career.

He collected the first medalist finish of his career in the Gusties' home tournament, the Bobby Kring Invite, on April 19, followed by a second-place finish at the Saint John's Spring Invitational the following week. Abdo was selected as the MIAC Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Gusties' home tournament and shot a season-best round of 68 (-3) at SJU on April 27.

This year's Male Newcomer of the Year ballot included (listed alphabetically) Abdo, hockey goaltender Colin Androlewicz (Fenton, N.H/New Hampton School), track & field triple-jumper Liam Frommelt (Woodbury, Minn.), tennis player Noah Hakim (Allen, Texas), and swimmer Jacob Robischon (Sauk Centre, Minn.). Robischon finished second in the voting, followed by Androlewicz in third.

Men's tennis junior Gage Gohl (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) was awarded the Male Athlete of the Year Award for the second consecutive season, while women's tennis first-year Karina Elvestrom (Minnetonka, Minn.) was selected as both the Female Athlete and Newcomer of the Year. Women's basketball and men's hockey were voted as the team's of the year by the 2024-25 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representatives.
