DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Gustavus Adolphus College volleyball team faced the Loras College Duhawks and the Edgewood University Eagles on Friday at the first day of the Loras Invite. The Gusties defeated both the Duhawks and Eagles by 3-0 sweep to improve to 8-1 overall this season.
Match One: Loras
Tied 11-11 in the opening set, Gustavus went on a 9-4 run to go up 20-15. The Duhawks responded with a 5-1 run to cut the Gusties' lead down to one point at 21-20. Gustavus then won four of the final five points to take the opening set 25-21.
In set two, the Gusties led 17-11 until Loras won four in a row to cut the lead down to two points. Gustavus then went on an 8-1 run to clinch the set 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Loras led 9-8 early in the third. At that point, the Gusties caught fire with a 17-3 run to close out the set 25-11 and winning the match 3-0.
Match Two: Edgewood
In the first set, the Gusties fell behind 11-10 early until a 7-1 run put Gustavus up 17-12. The run gave the Gusties the room they needed to take the set 25-20.
Set two saw Gustavus take a 10-2 lead right out the gate. The Gusties led by eight again at 20-12 and then went on a 5-1 run to take the set and go up 2-0 in the match.
Gustavus fell behind 7-4 early in the third until a 6-0 run put them up 10-7. The Gusties later led 15-10, but then Edgewood won four in a row to cut the lead down to one. Gustavus later led 19-17 and secured the win with a 6-1 run to take the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
