SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team hosted their Fall Invite this weekend with the first matches taking place on Saturday and the final matches taking place on Sunday.
The Gusties competed in 57 singles matches and 24 doubles matches for 81 total matches over the two days of the invite.
Kaya De Bruijn won the #1 singles championship, defeating Jamestown's Julie Van Zeijl on Sunday 7-6, 4-6, 10-8. To reach the championship, De Bruijn defeated Paula Garcia Acebal of Bemidji State 6-2, 6-4 in round one and then took down Pari Chaven of Grinnell 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 in the semifinals.
Pavla Yakimova was the #3 singles champion, rallying to defeat Grinnell's Anika Sheth 1-6, 7-5, 10-7. Yakimova reached the final after winning 6-2, 6-4 in round one and then rallying to win 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 in the semifinals.
Katie Thompson took the championship in #5 singles, defeating Grinnell's Luiza Kohn 6-3, 1-6, 10-7. On Saturday, Thompson won her opening round 6-1, 6-1 and then won her semifinal match 6-1, 6-0.
Bethany Smith was the victor of the #6 singles championship in a 6-2, 7-6 final.
The duo of
Karina Elvestrom and De Bruijn won the #1 doubles championship 8-4.
Maya Brakhage and Smith took the #2 doubles championship 8-5 over Grinnell's duo of Henning and Sheth.
Up next for Gustavus is the ITA Midwest Regional Championships which they host starting this Friday, September 19 and running for four days until Monday, September 22.
