MINNEAPOLIS – The Gustavus Adolphus College women's soccer team faced the Augsburg University Auggies on Tuesday night on the road in their conference opener. The Gusties and Auggies traded goals until Gustavus scored a game-winner in the 87th minute to secure a 4-3 victory.
Cambelle Waldspurger opened the scoring for Gustavus in the first minute of the game, scoring with
Lauren Coy assisting. The Auggies answered in the fifth minute to tie the game at 1-1. Waldspurger gave the Gusties the lead again in the 14
th minute with her second goal of the game, assisted by
Tessa Zachmann.
Three minutes into the second half, Augsburg scored again to even the score 2-2. Gustavus broke the tie again with just 15 minutes remaining as Zachmann scored with Waldspurger assisting.
The Auggies scored again in the final five minutes to even the game at 3-3, but a penalty in the final three minutes gave
Payton Mahady the opportunity to score the game-winner to take a 4-3 win for the Gusties in their MIAC opener.
Katelyn Olson had six saves in the win for Gustavus.
Up next for the Gusties is a return to Saint Peter for a home conference game against the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday, September 20 at 3:30 p.m.
