BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. - The Gustavus men's golf team started off the MIAC Championships on Saturday and sit in seventh place through 18 holes.
Both sophomore
Kyle Peterson (Duluth, Minn.) and first-year
Noah Gratil (Mellieha, Malta) were the top scorers for the Gusties, both shooting +6 78 rounds at Edinburgh. The two took very different approaches to their score, with Peterson shooting a 40 on the front and then a 38 on the back while Gratil shot a 34 on the front nine and a 44 on the latter. Senior
Blake Forrest (Maple Grove, Minn.) was just one shot behind, shooting a 79 which included two birdies. The fourth and final scorer on Day 1 at the MIAC Championships was sophomore
Charlie Looker (Cottage Grove, Minn.) who shot an 80. Looker found three birdies but was plagued by three double bogeys or worse as well.
The whole team had nine double bogeys or worse which were hard to battle back from on Day 1 of the Championships. " (The) golf course presented a great challenge today, the wind was something we have not seen yet this fall," said head coach
Scott Moe. "Thankfully, we are only 1/3 of the way done. We will make a few adjustments heading into tomorrow's game plan and we look forward to competing again".
Gustavus will be in a group tomorrow with Augsburg and St. Scholastica, starting competition with the first tee time at 10:27 a.m. and continuing every nine minutes until all five groups are on the course.
