Softball Drops Two in Mankato

MANKATO, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College softball team competed against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons and the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolves on Sunday. The Gusties battled in both games but ultimately fell to UWRF 3-4 and Nebraska Wesleyan 0-2. 
 
Game One: UW-River Falls
 
River Falls struck first, scoring one run in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Gusties responded in the second inning when Lauren Lambert singled to left field and later scored on a triple to center field by Olivia Guggenberger, tying the game 1-1.
 
Gustavus continued to apply pressure in the third. Caitlin Olafsson led off with a double to put herself in scoring position, and Katelyn Kasper followed with another double to left field to score Olafsson. The Gusties had a 2-1 advantage going into the fourth.
 
River Falls evened the score in the fifth, but Gustavus answered again. Lauren Lambert sparked the offense with a double to center field. Lambert advanced to third and eventually crossed the plate, giving the Gusties a 3-2 lead.
 
The Falcons responded with a run in the sixth to tie the score 3-3 before sealing the game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Ava Hamsund started in the circle for Gustavus and battled through six innings to keep the Gusties within reach.
 
Game Two: Nebraska Wesleyan
 
The Gusties got off to a slow start offensively, with both teams scoreless through the first four innings. Nebraska Wesleyan broke through in the fifth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh.
 
Maizie Anderson started in the circle for Gustavus and threw a complete game, striking out nine and allowing just two earned runs.

The Gusties head back to the Mankato dome on Saturday, February 21 to face UW-La Crosse at 3:30 p.m. and Minnesota Morris at 8:30 p.m.
