DES MOINES, Iowa - Two relay groups traveled down to the Drake Relays on Friday night to represent Gustavus track and field, the sprint medley and 4x200-meter relays. The sprint medley was the highlight, crushing the school record by over six seconds.
The first race for the Gusties was the record-breaking sprint medley, made up by juniors
Tyler Heil (Appleton, Wis.),
Jade Anstine (Sioux Falls, S.D.), and
Nick Brauer (Mankato, Minn.), along with sophomore
Conner Martens (Nicollet, Minn.), ran a 3:25.11, finishing second overall. The time broke the school record, set in 2000 by Chris Kubacki, Jerry Washington, David Berhardson, and John Person with a time of 3:32.00, by a resounding 6.89 seconds.
Next up was the 4x200-meter, consisting of Heil, Martens, Anstine, and fellow junior
Cullen Arneson (Minneapolis, Minn.) on the track. The team finished in 1:27.78, which sat in 14th place. The group got fourth in their heat, surrounded by Division I competition but the quality competition was able to help the group get the second-best time in program history, just 1.2 seconds behind the record set in 2002.
The team will travel back and join their teammates for the second and final home meet of the season, the Drake Alternative, starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Gustie Track & Field Complex.
