WHITTIER, Calif. – The No. 19 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College men's tennis team battled the Whittier College Poets and the No. 27 University of Redlands Bulldogs on Friday. The Gusties defeated the Poets 6-1 and the Bulldogs 4-3 to improve to 6-5 on the season.
Match One: Whittier Poets
Owen Skanse and
Noah Hakim opened the match against Whittier with a 6-2 win at #1 doubles.
Quinn Monson and
Joseph Li then won #3 doubles to secure the team point for the Gusties.
Ali Derbani and
Yash Bahalkar closed out the doubles sweep for Gustavus with a 6-4 win at #2.
In singles, Skanse put the Gusties up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #3 singles. Monson followed at #2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-2 to put Gustavus up 3-0. Hakim secured the match-deciding point with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #1 singles.
Derbani followed with a 7-6, 6-2 win at #6 singles. The Gusties earned one more point at #4 singles with
Yash Bahalkar's 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) victory.
Match Two: Redlands Bulldogs
Dominik Knutson and Takure Mhwandagara started their next match of the day off right with a 6-3 win. The Bulldogs tied doubles 1-1 with a win at #3, but the Gustie duo of
Gage Gohl and
Tyler Haddorff took the #1 match 7-6 to secure the team point for Gustavus.
In singles, Knutson put the Gusties up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #2 singles. Redlands won #6 singles to pull within one, but Haddorff won #3 singles to push Gustavus to a 3-1 lead.
The Bulldogs took #4 singles, but then Gohl secured the match for the Gusties with a 7-6, 6-1 win to secure the 4-3 team victory for the Gusties.
