FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 17 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College men's tennis team battled the No. 14 Emory University Eagles on Sunday in the seventh-place match of the Mary Washington Invite. The Gusties narrowly fell 4-3 to the Eagles in the final match of the invite, moving to 13-9 overall this season.
Gustavus jumped out to an 1-0 lead over Emory by winning the doubles point.
Gage Gohl and
Tyler Haddorff won #1 doubles 6-3 and the duo of
Noah Hakim and
Owen Skanse took #3 doubles with an identical 6-3 victory for the Gusties to secure the team point.
The Eagles tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #5 singles. Emory then took #2 singles 6-2, 6-3 to take a 2-1 lead over Gustavus. Gohl tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #1 singles.
Quinn Monson retook the lead for the Gusties with a 7-6, 6-4 win at #6 singles, putting Gustavus up 3-2 and just one point away from a team victory. However, the Eagles tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 win at #4 singles and then rallied to take #3 singles 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to come back and defeat the Gusties in a 4-3 final.
Up next for Gustavus is a return home to Saint Peter to host the Carleton College Knights for a conference match on Saturday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. in the Swanson Tennis Center.
