MINNEAPOLIS – The Gustavus Adolphus College softball team battled Augsburg University Auggies on Sunday in a conference doubleheader. The Gusties shut out the Auggies in both games, starting with a 7-0 win in game one. In the second game,
Maizie Anderson threw a five-inning no-hitter as the Gusties won 11-0 in a game shortened by the mercy rule. The pair of wins pushes the Gusties overall record to 17-17 while moving to 10-8 in the MIAC.
Game One
After a scoreless first two innings, Gustavus broke through with a four-run third. After the first three batters of the inning reached to load the bases,
Sarah Lambert scored on a fielder's choice for the first run of the game. Three batters later and with two outs on the board, both
Caitlin Olafsson and
Paige Gritzmaker scored on a throwing error to put the Gusties up by three. Gustavus loaded the bases again later that same inning, and once again scored as a Augsburg throwing error allowed
Hailey Petzel to score from third, putting the Gusties up 4-0.
Two innings later in the fifth with one out and runners on first and second,
Sarah Lambert lined an RBI single to center to score
Olivia Guggenberger from second. In the next at-bat, Olafsson followed with another Gustie RBI single to center to drive in
Taylor Katzenmeyer. Lambert then walked to load the bases for Gritzmaker who was then hit by a pitch, bringing home another run to put Gustavus up 7-0.
Those two big innings would prove more than enough for the Gusties as their pitchers shut out the Auggies. Petzel earned the win with a start in the circle, letting up just five hits while striking out two and walking none.
Ava Hamsund followed with two strong innings to close out the win, allowing just one hit while striking out three and walking none.
Game Two
Anderson no-hit Augsburg in the second game of the doubleheader, pitching five hitless innings while only walking two Auggies and striking out five. The Gusties' offensive output shortened the game from a scheduled seven to five as the bats caught fire to drive in 11 runs.
The scoring started in the top of the first as Olafsson scored on a dropped fly ball in left field. Petzel then drove in a run with a single to left, doubling Gustavus' lead. Two batters later with the bases loaded,
Madison Westover drove in a third run with a sac fly to center. Guggenberger then drove in another run with a single through the left side as the Gusties went up 4-0.
Gustavus scored twice more in the second inning. Olafsson dashed home on a wild pitch to score the fifth run of the day. Gritzmaker then hit an RBI single through the left side to put the Gusties up 6-0.
In the fourth, Gustavus scored four more runs. Olafsson led off the inning with a hit and then stole second, setting up
Lauren Lambert who hit an RBI single to left. Lambert later scored on a groundout for the eighth run of the game. In the next at bat, Westover blasted a two-run bomb over the right centerfield wall to put Gustavus up 10-0.
The Gusties scored once more in the game in the top of the fifth as Katzenmeyer reached home on a wild pitch. The mercy rule cut the game short to five innings as Gustavus' offensive output and Anderson's brilliance in the circle secured the 11-0 win.
