EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Gustavus Adolphus College softball team battled the Hope College Flying Dutch in a non-conference doubleheader on Friday at a neutral site in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The Gusties fell in both games to the Flying Dutch, dropping game one 2-0 and game two 4-1 to move to 7-9 overall on the year.
Game One
Gustavus and Hope combined for just five total hits in the first game on Friday.
Maizie Anderson pitched five no-hit innings for the Gusties, but the Flying Dutch broke through in the sixth inning with three hits leading to two runs.
Those two runs would prove to be enough for Hope to secure the win as the Gusties had only two hits in the opener while being held scoreless.
Game Two
The bats for both teams remained cold through the first five innings of the second game of the doubleheader, with neither team managing to score.
In the top of the sixth, however, the Flying Dutch had four of their six total hits in the game to power them to a four-run inning.
The Gusties started to rally in the bottom of the seventh as they loaded the bases with two outs for
Hailey Petzel, who drove in one run with an RBI single to right field to cap off a three-hit game.
With the tying run at first base, Hope struck out of the next batter to cut Gustavus' rally short and secure the series sweep.
Up Next
The Gusties will host their home opener on Tuesday, April 7 against the Concordia College Cobbers starting at 3:30 p.m.
