Olson Makes 17 Saves, Gusties Fall 3-0

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Gustavus women's soccer team weathered the storm on Wednesday night against UW-La Crosse and although Katelyn Olson made 17 saves, three slipped past for a 3-0 setback.

UW-La Crosse (4-0-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) showed why they were deserving of receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, firing 39 total shots, finding 12 corner kicks, and keeping the Gusties (1-2-1, 0-0-0 MIAC) to just two shots on goal. Senior Katelyn Olson (Cloquet, Minn.) was a standout for Gustavus, making 17 saves across the 90 minutes.

The Eagles scored their first goal in the 14th minute, one that just got over the outstretched hand of Olson. Olson then made seven saves in the middle section of the first half and kept UW-La Crosse at bay, but the Eagles broke through again in the 43rd minute, scoring a goal that hit the crossbar on its way to the back of the net.

Gustavus junior Kate Hamski (Blaine, Minn.) fired the first shot on goal for the Gusties in the 56th minute, forcing a save off a low, driven free kick. UW-La Crosse took that bit of Gustie momentum and came back and scored their third and final of the night after a cross that led to a collision with Olson in front of goal. First-year Brayleigh Sumner (Grafton, Wis.) had the second shot on goal for Gustavus with another low, driven shot that forced the Eagle goalkeeper to collect.

The Gusties had 100 percent accuracy on shots tonight, with both forcing saves. Head Coach Lauren Johnson used the match as an opportunity to play 24 different players, including Katie Thomas (Mounds View, Minn.) and Anthea Brazzell (Stillwater, Minn.), who got their first appearances of the season.

After three games on the road, Gustavus women's soccer returns home at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, taking on the Milwaukee School of Engineering at the Gustie Soccer Field.
