DULUTH, Minn. – The Gustavus men's hockey team suffered a convincing 10-3 loss at St. Scholastica on Thursday night, dropping to 0-2-1 overall and 0-1 in the MIAC.
The scoring onslaught began just 20 seconds into the game for the Saints as they added goals at 3:07, 5:45, and 14:18 in the first for a 4-0 lead before the Gusties ended the shutout with 5:12 left in the frame.
Wilmer Svensson (Fy., Stockholm, Sweden) scored his first collegiate goal, assisted by
Mason Hendrickson (Fy., Deephaven). The Saints got that goal back three minutes later and ended the first period with a 5-1 advantage.
St. Scholastica added two more goals in the second period, just 12 seconds apart, for a 7-1 advantage. Hendrickson then scored unassisted at the 10:35 mark while
Toby Sengvongxay (Sr., Luverne) tallied his first goal of the season at the 11:59 mark with the help of
Joey Gimberlin (So., Mendota Heights) and
Christian Miller (Fy., Grand Rapids). The score read 7-3 Saints at the end of the second.
The Saints then added three unanswered goals in the third period, including a salt-in-an-open-wound 10th goal with three seconds left in the game.
Despite the lopsided score, the Gusties outshot the Saints in every period for a 34-29 advantage. Gustavus went 0-for-5 on the power play while the Saints were 1-for-6 on the advantage.
Jackson Hjelle (Jr., Delano) suffered the loss in goal after allowing five goals in the first period, while making four saves.
Zach Dosan (Fy., Bloomington) played the remainder of the game with five goals allowed and 15 saves.
Gustavus and St. Scholastica wrap up the series at 7 p.m. Saturday in Saint Peter.
