Men’s Hockey Cruises Past Concordia-Wisconsin 8-2

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men's hockey team is off the schneid after a convincing 8-2 win over Concordia-Wisconsin on Saturday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink. The eight goals are the most scored by Gustavus since an 8-4 win over Augsburg on Jan. 24, 2009. The Gusties snap a five game losing streak with their first win of the season, moving to 1-8-2 overall, while the Falcons drop to 2-11.

Nick Mohs-Messerli (So., Orono) tallied his first goal of the season to put the Gusties up 1-0 at the 9:20 mark of the first. Kyle Heffron (So., Rosemount) and Toby Sengvongxay (Sr., Luverne) assisted on the goal. The Falcons netted the equalizer five minutes later and the score remained 1-1 at the end of the first.

Two and a half minutes into the second, Joey Gimberlin (So., Mendota Heights) fed Nate Stone (Fy., Edina) directly in front of the net for the go-ahead goal, his second of the season. Sengvongxay was credited with the second assist. Jac Triemert (So., Woodbury) notched his third goal of the season at the 5:05 mark, helped by Kylar Fenton (So., Grafton, Wis.), and Brandon McNamara (So., Andover) scored his first goal of the season at the 13:50 mark, assisted by Triemert, for a 4-1 Gustie lead after 40 minutes of play.

Mohs-Messerli tallied his second goal of the game three minutes into third, assisted by Heffron. The Falcons scored their second goal of the game a the 8:01 mark, but that was last last goal scored against Jackson Hjelle (Jr., Delano), who earned his first win of the season after making 18 saves. Concordia-Wisconsin pulled the goalie with over six minutes left in the game and Triemert tallied his second goal of the game on an empty net. Christian Miller (Fy., Grand Rapids) then scored his first career goal on an odd-man rush with Lucas Jorgenson (So., Orono) and Mason Hendrickson (Fy., Deephaven) with just over five minutes on the clock and Wilmer Svensson (Fy., Stockholm, Sweden) put the final nail in the coffin with a goal at the 19:02 mark.

Gustavus outshot Concordia-Wisconsin 51-20. Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Gusties are off until Dec. 29 when they take on Marian University in Superior, Wis.
