Men's Tennis Doubles Teams Advance at ITA Cup

10/12/2023 11:59:00 PM

ROME, Ga. - Four members of the Gustavus men's tennis team shined on the national stage Thursday. The doubles teams of Gage Gohl/Tyler Haddorff and Marco Siviero/Josh Christensen both won their first round matchups at the ITA Cup, advancing to Friday's quarterfinals.

Gohl and Haddorff already earned All-America status by way of winning the regional championship, but Siviero and Christensen have now achieved All-America laurels as well by way of winning their first round ITA Cup match as regional runners up. Gohl and Haddorff defeated Peter Leese and Rishi Charan Shankar of the University of Mary Washington by a score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), while Siviero and Christensen beat Vishwa Aduru and Diego Maza of Case Western Reserve 6-3, 3-6, 10-4. Gohl and Haddorff will face Eshaan Lumba and Matthew Feng of Pomona Pitzer, while Siviero and Christensen will face Connor Whittington and Jared Perry of Trinity. Both matches are scheduled for 6 p.m. (central) Friday.

Gohl also competed in the singles draw Thursday and lost his first round match 6-4, 7-5 to Raghav Jangbahadur of Carnegie Mellon. Gohl will play in the consolation Friday.

"The guys put together a great first day at ITA Cup," Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. "Gage competed well in his singles match. The conditions were challenging and he played a very talented opponent from Carnegie Mellon. He had some good looks in both sets and couldn't quite get over the line, but he handled the moment well and made great adjustments, and will grow a ton from this one.

"Both doubles teams were outstanding tonight. Gage and Tyler came out flying and executed our game plan very well. When they faced adversity in the second set they raised their level, stayed poised and came through in the late stages. It was great to see that level of competitive maturity from a young team on the national stage for the first time. Josh and Marco put together a beautiful performance on every level. The played aggressively, they served and returned well, and they stayed calm and bold in the big moments. They trusted their plan, themselves, and each other, and they bounced back from a narrow loss of the second set to play as good and courageous and present of a super breaker as you'll see, especially given the caliber of opposition.

"For them to come away from today with All-American honors is so well deserved. We're grateful for the result and the accolades, but most of all grateful for how well they represented our program and welcomed the challenge. It was great progress for them and for our team. To have two doubles teams in the quarters of this prestigious event is an honor. Now we'll need to focus on recovering, and preparing for big challenges against excellent competition tomorrow."
