CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Gage Gohl and
Tyler Haddorff of the No. 23 nationally ranked Gustavus men's tennis team competed in the doubles final of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships on Tuesday. The No. 12 nationally ranked doubles duo of Gohl and Haddorff, who previously won the 2024 doubles national title, fell in the championship match 6-2, 6-4 to No. 3 Ethan Green and Kael Shalin Shah of the Denison University Big Red.
The two doubles pairs previously faced each other earlier this season back on February 20 in the first round of the ITA DIII National Men's Team Indoor Championship with Denison narrowly winning 7-6 (7-3).
In the opening set of Tuesday's title match, the first three games were all won by service break as the Big Red went up 2-1. The Gusties stayed within a game of Denison down 3-2, but then Green and Shah went on a three-game run to take the opening set 6-2.
In the second set, the two teams stayed on serve through 3-3 until the Big Red broke Gustavus to take a 4-3 lead. Green and Shah won their next serve to go up 5-3. Gohl and Haddorff won their following serve to make it 5-4 but still needed to break Denison to get back on serve. Green and Shah took the final game in straight points to clinch the national championship.
Gohl and Haddorff finished the year with a 30-6 record in doubles, going 14-2 in tournament matches. In their collegiate career as doubles partners, the two went 75-21 overall with a 28-7 record in tournaments and a 47-14 record in duals. The pair won the 2024 NCAA Doubles National Championship and earned four All-American awards as a doubles duo; two from the ITA and two from the NCAA.
As a program this year, the Gusties had a 20-10 overall record. In the MIAC, Gustavus won all nine matches to clinch their 56th overall and 37th consecutive MIAC Regular Season Championship, improving their all-time record in conference regular season games to 595-3. In the conference postseason, the Gusties won their 15th consecutive and 18th all-time MIAC postseason title.
