NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Gustavus women's soccer team lost a tightly-contested 4-3 decision at St. Olaf on Wednesday afternoon, dropping to 7-7-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the MIAC.
It didn't take long for either team to get on the board as St. Olaf landed the first punch 1:41 into the game for the early lead. Just 32 seconds later,
Cambelle Waldspurger broke free and went top right corner of the net for the equalizer.
The Gusties took the lead at the 17:34 mark after a Ole penalty gave Waldspurger a free kick just outside the 18 where she chipped it into the left side of the net for a 2-1 advantage. Just as the Gusties were quick to respond to St. Olaf's first goal, the Oles were quick to answer the Gusties' second score with an equalizer goal at the 19:07 mark. The score remained 2-2 at halftime.
Less than two minutes into the second frame, the Oles took advantage of a corner kick for a 3-2 lead and added what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 54:21 mark. With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Walspurger broke free into the Ole third, passed to
Jordan Oelkers, who then found
Lillian Selberg for a tap-in goal. But the Oles fended off the late Gustie surge in the final minute to secure the win.
St. Olaf outshot Gustavus 19-6 overall and 5-3 on goal.
Katelyn Olson made one save against five shots.
The Gusties, who are three points out of the final MIAC playoff spot with two league games remaining, return home Saturday against Bethel.
