GRINNELL, Iowa — The Gustavus swimming & diving teams continued competition at the Grinnell College Pioneer Classic Saturday, and walked away with a pair of wins. The Gustavus men finished first of four teams with a total of 1946.5 points, bettering host Grinnell, Lawrence and Simpson. The Gustie women finished first of six teams with 1763 points, defeating Grinnell, UN-Kearney, Simpson, Lawrence, and Wash U.
"It was a great meet for both our men and our women," said Head Coach
Jon Carlson. "The divers dove well and the swimmers were exceptional in the pool. Nearly all of our swims this weekend were a season best, and it was a great way to end the official semester of competition.
Peyton Richardson broke the school record in the 100 IM, and was truly outstanding for us all weekend.
Lucy Peterson was once again lights out for our women this weekend. Those two really had an extraordinary weekend, but overall, everyone swam great. There were so many inspiring performances this weekend to everyone on the team, and they're definitely fired up after this weekend's performance."
On day one, the Gustie women took first in the 200 free relay, as the team of
Olivia Koeneman,
Stella Anderson Moye,
Chelsy Johnson, and Peterson touched the wall in 1:37.94. Peterson also won the 50 free in 23.61. Anderson Moye added an impressive finish in the 500 free, taking second in 5:21.94. Anderson Moye, Peterson,
Hadley Wartner, and
Leah Soukup added a second place finish in the 400 medley relay, finishing in 4:04.12 behind host Grinnell (3:58.88).
On day two, Anderson Moye added another second place finish, this time in the 200 free, taking second in 1:59.23. First-year
Hadley Wartner took second in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:09.18. Peterson added two more wins to her total Saturday, as the senior won the 100 IM in 1:01.71 and the 100 free in 52.92. The Gusties also won the 400 free relay, as
Macey Whitlock, Koeneman, Anderson Moye, and Peterson took first in 3:36.74, setting a new meet record
On the men's side on Friday, the Ripken brothers dominated the 50 free, as Kieran took first in 20.95 and brother Braden took second in 21.32. Other notable performances for the Gusties included a second place finish in the 200 free relay, as
Aiden Shermak,
Matt Strom, and the Ripken brothers finished in 1:24.94.
Matt Strom also took second in the 500 free, breaking the previous meet record with a time of 4:39.79.
Peyton Richardson took second for the Gusties in the 200 IM, finishing in 1:55.52. Richardson was also a part of another new meet record in the 400 medley relay as he, Strom,
Kieran Ripken and Shermak finished second in 3:26.41. The Gusties took first and second in the 3-meter diving, as
Andrew Jensen finished first (384.20) and
Ryan Lester finished second (340.25).
Matt Strom added a first-place finish in the 200 free Saturday, touching the wall in 1:44.59.
Nyden Hill added another win for the Gusties in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 57.42. Richardson won the men's 100 IM, setting a new meet and school record at 52.61. The Gustie men also finished second in the 400 free relay (3:09.87) and the 200 medley relay (1:32.80), breaking the previous meet record.
The Gusties are off from official competition for the next few weeks, but will take part in the team's Blizzard Intrasquad competition next weekend, before heading to Puerto Rico for the team holiday trip from the end of December to January.
