DULUTH, Minn. - No. 10 Gustavus women's basketball won its fifth straight game Monday, beating St. Scholastica 59-40. The Gusties improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC, while the Saints drop to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the league.
After a slow start that saw the Gusties gain a 13-9 lead in the first quarter, the visitors created separation in the second by outscoring the Saints 22-9 for a 35-18 advantage at the break. The second half produced limited offense on both sides as neither team scored more than 13 points in either the third or fourth quarters.
Gustavus shot a season-low 38.3 percent but held the Saints to 26.1 percent. The Gusties also won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Saints 46-31.
Emma Kniefel led the offense with 11 points and had a team-high four steals.
Kylie Baranick and
Rachel Kawiecki each contributed 10 points, while Kawiecki posted a double-double with 10 rebounds. Kawiecki also added three blocks.
The Gusties return home Wednesday for a conference matchup against Macalester.
