MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. — The Gustavus men's golf team opened its fall season in a dual meet against Saint John's, finishing round two of competition at Pioneer Creek in Maple Plain, Minn. The Gusties' A team shot 311-286-597 in two rounds between Saturday and Sunday, while the nationally-ranked Johnnies bettered Gustavus by 17 shots - 301-279-580.

Teddy Kaste (Apple Valley, Minn.) led the way for the Gusties, carding a 73-69-142 to tie for first and earn medalist honors. Pelayo Perez Crespo (Sotogrande, Spain) finished behind Kaste, carding a 146 to tie for second. Wyatt Carlson (Wayzata, Minn.) led the second Gustie team with a 75-75-150 through two rounds for third among the Gusties and eighth overall.

"We clearly had a much better day today," said Head Coach Scott Moe. "We played smarter golf - not conservative - just smarter, and it certainly showed. If we are going to compete at a high-level, we need four strong scores in order to do so.

"Teddy and Pelayo both had a great weekend, and it was great to see Teddy tie for medalist honors. Jack Reinardy (Andover, Minn.) came back with the type of score he had been shooting which was great to see. We're looking forward to coming back to Pioneer Creek this coming weekend in a very strong field. We have some work to do, and we're looking forward to getting after it."

The Gusties compete at the Minnesota Classic hosted by Bethel University next weekend.
