MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Gustavus men's hockey team nearly completed the comeback Friday night at Augsburg but couldn't net the equalizer with an extra skater in the final moments, falling 3-2. The Gusties drop to 7-9-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the MIAC, while the Auggies improve to 8-7-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the league.Â
After a scoreless first period,
Grant Ellings got the Gusties on the board first with a goal 1:50 into the second, assisted by
Wilmer Svensson and
Jack Kubitz. Ten minutes later, the Auggies answered with the equalizer and then took a 2-1 lead at the 12:42 mark.Â
Eight minutes into the third period, Augsburg went up 3-1 and held the two-goal advantage until
Kylar Fenton scored a power play goal with 4:25 remaining in regulation.
Drew Holt assisted on the score.Â
With time winding down, the Gusties pulled goalie
Jackson Hjelle and nearly netted the game-tying goal on a shot by
Christian Miller with less than a minute to go, but the Auggies held on for the win.Â
Gustavus outshot Augsburg 36-29 as Hjelle made 26 saves in net. The Gusties played disciplined hockey without taking a penalty and 1-for-2 on the power play.Â
The Gusties and Auggies wrap up the series at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Don Roberts Ice Rink.Â
