SAINT PETER, Minn. - For the second consecutive game, the Gustavus women's basketball team eclipsed the century mark in a 101-58 win over St. Scholastica on Wednesday. The Gusties, ranked No. 5 in the latest WBCA Division III poll, improve to 17-1 overall and 13-0 in the MIAC.
The Gusties scored the first nine points of the game and never trailed. While the offense clearly was the story of the game, the Gustie defense was stout, especially in the first half as they held the Saints without a field goal for the first 5:34 of the game. Gustavus led 32-10 after the first quarter and continued to add to its lead the rest of the way. A 52-25 halftime lead grew into 74-40 after three quarters and Head Coach
Laurie Kelly once again had the luxury of clearing her bench in the fourth quarter, playing all 17 dressed players.
Gustavus set the program record for single game field goal percentage at 67.2 percent and set a season-high for field goals made (41-61).
Syd Hauger paced the offense with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, and added four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Emily Bowron and
Morgan Kelly were next with 14 points apiece.
Emma Kniefel contributed 13 points and six steals. The Gusties forced 23 turnovers, resulting in 33 points.
Gustavus is next in action Saturday afternoon at Bethel. The Gusties won the first game of the series 82-68 on Jan. 6.
