EDINA, Minn. – No. 24 Gustavus men's golf continued the 2024 MIAC Championships Sunday at Braemar Golf Course in Edina for the second round of the conference tournament. After
Teddy Kaste (Sr., Apple Valley) led the field on day one, teammate
Chris Gutuza (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa) took his spot on Sunday, leading the field through round two.
The Gusties shot a 307 as a team, compared to round one's 298. Carleton continued to lead the conference, posting a 297 for a two round total of 589. The Gusties are 16 shots behind Carleton in first, four behind Concordia and Saint John's in second, and three behind Bethel in fourth.
Gutuza posted a one-under 71 in round two to jump up four spots from his first round. The junior carded four birdies and 11 pars to be the only athlete in the second round to shoot below par. Kaste, who was in first after round one, dropped nine spots to 10th overall after carding a six-over 78 on Sunday. Kaste had a birdie on 16 and a three-shot eagle to highlight his day.
Blake Forrest (So., Maple Grove) made a jump in the standings alongside Gutuza, posting three birdies for a five-over 77 in round two. He currently sits in 19th after Saturday and Sunday.
Pelayo Perez Crespo (Jr., Sotogrande, Spain) held his round one standing at 29th, shooting an eight-over 80 on Sunday with a birdie.
Wyatt Carlson (Jr., Wayzata) rounded out the Gustie group, with a 12-over 84 on Sunday with a pair of birdies. Carlson dropped seven spots to 36th.
"Conditions were quite difficult today, however, we compounded mistakes to lead to the round that we posted," said Head Coach
Scott Moe '95. "We need to be a lot sharper and way more consistent after missing a shot. We still have a great chance tomorrow to move way up the leaderboard, but we need to have all five guys be committed to a great round. If we do that, it will be a good way to finish the fall. Chris had a spectacular round today, he stayed true to his game plan, very happy for how his round turned out."
The Gusties will continue competition on the final day of the championship tournament Monday in Edina.
