Women's Hockey Completes MIAC Sweep of St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – No. 2 Gustavus women's hockey completed the conference sweep of St. Olaf Saturday afternoon, winning 2-1 on a third period Kaitlyn Holland (Sr., Aberdeen, S.D.) goal. Playing in her second collegiate game, Lily Timmons (Fy., Stillwater, Minn.) led the Gusties (2-1-0, 2-0-0 MIAC) with a number of key saves against the Oles (2-4-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) to help her team to victory.

Lily Mortenson (Jr., Champlin, Minn.) continued to set the offensive tone for the Gusties, scoring her third goal in as many games, just 45 seconds into the game. Hannah Gray (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) walked around the Ole zone after the opening faceoff and sent a pass from behind the net to Mortenson on the near-side post. The junior collected the puck between two Ole defenders, got a shot off that was saved, but made a diving follow-up attempt to tuck the puck in behind St. Olaf netminder Olivia Last, who conceded a goal less than a minute into her first collegiate start.

The Gustie lead didn't hold for long, as St. Olaf scored an early equalizer two minutes later. St. Olaf's Molly Terebayza came down on the Gusties on a 2-on-1 and opted for the shot, beating Timmons for the first time of her career over her right pad. A double-penalty put the Gusties on the power play for four minutes, but they were unable to convert, ending the period deadlocked 1-1.

St. Olaf turned the tides in the second period, out-shooting the Gusites 9-7 in the second frame. St. Olaf dominated the play, as the Gusties struggled to get strong chances on the net of Last. Timmons saved all seven shots that came her way, including three chances on the Ole power play, to keep the score tied at 1-1 after the second.

Despite the pair of early goals, both teams played 48 minutes of scoreless hockey, as Timmons and Last stood tall between the pipes. Brooke Power (5th, Lakeville, Minn.) had a chance on the power play with a one-timer chance out front, and the Oles went back the other way on another 2-on-1, but neither chance broke the silence thanks to the two first-year goaltenders. Holland was the Gusties' savior, scoring with 8:49 to play, taking a feed from none other than Mortenson for the game-winner. Mortenson walked into the right corner in the Ole zone, beat a pair of defenders, and found Holland across the zone who sent her second of the series behind Last.

The Gusties were victim to a five minute penalty 25 seconds later, but successfully killed it, thanks once again to clutch saves from Timmons. Gustavus held on through the final few minutes to finish the weekend with a pair of MIAC victories.

Gustavus finished out-shooting St. Olaf 34-20, narrowly winning the faceoff battle with 31 wins to the Oles' 29. For the first time in the team's first three games, the Gusties were unable to convert with the player advantage, going 0-for-5 on the power play, but successfully killing all of their penalties. Mortenson led the squad with seven shots, a goal, and an assist, while Noelle Hemr (Fy., Blaine, Minn.) added six shots to the team's total. Timmons collected 19 saves in her second collegiate start, while Ole goaltender Last made 32.

The Gusties are back at home next week hosting Concordia (0-2-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) for a pair of games at Don Roberts Ice Rink Friday and Saturday.
