RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Gustavus men's hockey suffered a 4-1 loss at UW-River Falls on Saturday night, dropping to 0-2 overall.
The first period appeared to be ending without a goal until the Falcons got a breakaway short-handed goal late in the frame for a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second period, the Gusties tied the score as
Luke Delzer skated up the left boards, avoided a defender, and made a crossing pass to
Mason Hendrickson on the right side for the goal. The tie score was short-lived, though, as the Falcons regained the lead less than two minutes later. And with just five seconds remaining in the second, the Falcons delivered a gut punch with their third goal of the game, carrying a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
River Falls added an empty net goal late in the third period to seal the win.
The Gusties edged the Falcons in shots, 27-25. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play. Making his first start of the season,
Marko Belak made 21 saves for the Gusties.
Gustavus now enters MIAC play next weekend with a home-home series against St. Olaf. Friday night is in Northfield and Saturday night is the home opener for the Gusties.
