MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Gustavus women's hockey team completed the road-sweep of Concordia Saturday with a commanding 6-0 win in Moorhead. The Gusties, who claimed their 19th conference championship Friday, improve to 18-4-0 overall and 15-1-0 in the MIAC.
Gustavus fifth-year goalie
Katie McCoy, who recently became the NCAA Division III career shutout leader, claimed yet another record Saturday, this time as the winningest goalie in Division III women's hockey. McCoy made eight saves in the 6-0 win over Concordia, and passes the previous record of 77 set by UW-River Falls' Angie Hall (2014-18). The All-American goaltender has an impressive career record of 78-13-3.
The Gusties once again peppered the Cobber goalie, putting 17 shots on goal in just the first period. Two got by the home team's netminder Becca Macklin, as
Kylie Ligday and
Hailey Holland scored within just 40 seconds of each other. Ligday took a pass from
Sophia Coltvet at the point and sent a shot to the back bar with plenty of traffic in front of the net. Holland, just one shift later, scored on a backhand wrap-around attempt off a
Brooke Power rebound.
The Gusties turned up the offensive heat in the second period, scoring three goals in the middle frame.
Kaitlyn Holland converted a power play tally eight minutes into the period, as
Hannah Gray quarterbacked a perfect tip play, walking the circle and sending a picturesque shot-pass to the stick of Holland in front of the net.
Sophia Coltvet scored the final two of the period on nearly identical plays, scoring two goals from the blue line to end the period with a 5-0 edge over the Cobbers.
Brooke Power added one more for good measure in the third, as she and her linemates
Hailey Holland and
Emily Olson played some tic-tac-toe passing to send the puck to the stick of Power on the back door, who one-timed it into a wide-open Cobber net.
Power,
Hailey Holland, and Ligday led the Gustie offense with three points each, all on a goal and two assists. Coltvet, who scored her second and third of the weekend Saturday, once again paced the team with 10 shots on goal. The Gusties totaled a season-high 57 shots on goal, and outshot Concordia 103-24 through both games. McCoy played the first 44:53 of the game, making eight saves to get the win.
Maya Marston, in 15:07 of relief, made two saves to lock things down for the shared shutout.
The Gusties are on the road once more next Friday, heading to St. Olaf for a 6 p.m. puck drop in Northfield, before wrapping up the regular season at home on Saturday for Senior Day.
