NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Gustavus men's hockey team wrapped up the 2023-24 season Saturday at St. Olaf with a 5-1 loss. The Gusties finish the season 11-12-2 overall and 6-9-1 in the MIAC.Â
It didn't take long for the Gusties to light the lamp as
Drew Holt scored his seventh goal of the season, assisted by
Kylar Fenton and
Stanislav Danaev. But the lead didn't hold for long as the Oles responded three minutes later and then took a 2-1 advantage at the 8:14 mark, which proved to be the game-winner.Â
St. Olaf added another score before the end of the first for a comfortable 3-1 lead at the first break. The Oles tacked on a goal in each the second and third periods for the 5-1 final.
St. Olaf outshot Gustavus 40-25 as
Will Pinney suffered the loss in 20 minutes of action, allowing three goals with 11 saves.
Zach Dosan played the second and allowed one goal with 17 saves, and
Marko Belak played the third, making seven saves without letting up a goal.Â
The game marked
Brett Petersen's final career game behind the Gustie bench, finishing his head coaching career with a 267-280-66 overall record in 24 seasons. Petersen's finishes as the Gustavus men's hockey program's second winningest coach, having won one MIAC regular season championship, two MIAC playoff championships, and a second place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championships. He coached three MIAC Players of the Year, nine All-Americans, and one National Player of the Year.Â
