SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Gustavus women's hockey team completed the regular season Saturday afternoon in shutout fashion, defeating St. Olaf 3-0 at Don Roberts Ice Rink. The Gusties, who clinched their 19th MIAC Regular Season Championship the weekend before against Concordia, finish with a MIAC record of 17-1 and overall record of 20-4 heading into postseason play.
Gustavus scored a goal in each period to seal the win on Senior Day, led off by
Brooke Power five minutes into the first. Power, on a 3-on-1 with linemates
Emily Olson and
Hailey Holland, opted for the shot as she walked into the Ole zone, sending the puck over the right shoulder of St. Olaf goalie Carley Tuman.
Katie McCoy, who earned her third consecutive shutout, did most of her work in the first period, saving all four Ole shots she saw, including two on the St. Olaf power play.
Emily Olson doubled the lead in the second period, once again scoring five minutes after the initial puck drop in the frame. Olson tipped a shot from
Kylie Ligday past Tuman for her sixth goal of the season.
Kaitlyn Holland closed things out in the third, as a shot from
Molly McHugh tipped off Holland's stick and into the top right corner of the net for the final goal of the game.
The Gusties outshot the Oles 26-8, led by McHugh with five on goal. The Gusties dominated in the faceoff circle, posting an impressive 66 percent on draws as a team.
Emily Olson led the point production for the night, getting a goal and an assist in her final regular season game as a Gustie. McCoy finished with eight saves between the pipes for her 80th career win.
The Gusties, as the No. 1 seed in the MIAC Playoffs, will host the winner of the quarterfinal between Bethel and Hamline next Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
