NICOLASVILLE, Ky. — The Gustavus men's tennis team opened the 2024 ITA Indoor Championships Friday afternoon, matching up with No. 6 Emory in the first round of the tournament. The No. 12 Gusties fell to Emory 6-1 in the match, getting wins from
Marco Siviero and
Josh Christensen in the No. 1 doubles and
Caleb Fridinger in the No. 6 singles.
Christensen and Siviero, ranked fourth nationally in the doubles, picked up the Gusties one doubles win, defeating Emory's Ryan Glanville and Brandon Cohen 6-4.
Gage Gohl and
Tyler Haddorff, the seventh ranked doubles duo in the country, fell at the hands of Dean Kamenev and Nolan Shah, ranked second in the country, 6-3.
Caleb Fridinger and
Rafael de Camargo Costa also dropped a 6-3 decision in the No. 3 spot, giving Emory the doubles point.
Siviero, the back-to-back MIAC Athlete of the Week, carried his doubles momentum to the singles, winning his first set over Dean Kamenev 6-4, before falling 6-3 and 10-7 in the tiebreaker to drop the No. 1 singles match.
Caleb Fridinger won the only singles match for the Gusties, 6-4 and 6-2, over Emory's Ryan Nash. Christensen, de Camargo Costa, Gohl, and
Dominik Knutson all dropped straight sets to the Eagles in their singles matchups.
The Gusties will now face No. 14 Trinity in the first consolation round of the tournament, to be played at 8 a.m. central Saturday morning. Emory will advance to play Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the tournament semifinals.
