Women's Basketball Claims Third Straight MIAC Playoff Title

SAINT PETER, Minn. - Call it a dynasty.

The Gustavus women's basketball team claimed its third consecutive MIAC playoff championship Saturday afternoon at Gus Young Court, cruising by Concordia 66-38 to punch its ticket to the NCAA tournament. The 28-point margin of victory is the largest in a championship game in the history of the conference tournament, surpassing last season's 79-57 win for the Gusties over Concordia.

Emma Kniefel sunk a three-pointer 26 seconds into the game and the Gusties never looked back. Another three by Kniefel at the 3:26 mark of the first gave the Gusties a double-digit lead and they carried a 21-10 advantage into the second frame. Gustavus continued to add to its lead in the second, ending the half with a 39-19 lead.

Gustavus put the game out of reach in the third quarter as an Emily Bowron three at the 3:41 mark gave the home team a 30-point advantage. The fourth quarter proved to be a moot point as once again Head Coach Laurie Kelly was able to clear her bench.

The Gusties shot 52.8 percent from the floor, led by Kniefel with 15 points and six assists. Rachel Kawiecki added 12 points and Morgan Kelly chipped in 10 off the bench. Izzy Quick continued to control the boards, leading all players with 10 rebounds.

The NCAA Division III selection show is set for Monday afternoon, where the Gusties will find out who, when, and where they will play their first round game.
