SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Gustavus women's tennis team competed in a series of three matches on Saturday, hosting Northwestern-Iowa, Bethany Lutheran, and Concordia-Moorhead, and walked away with a trio of 9-0 wins at the Swanson Tennis Center. The Gusties didn't drop a set in all three competitions, sweeping all doubles and singles competitions.
Against Northwestern-Iowa,
Pavla Yakimova and
Alli Laux picked up the first victory of the day, winning 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Kaya De Bruijn and
Bethany Smith won 8-2 at No. 1, before
Annie Klemmensen and
Veranique Poquette took home win three of the day at the No. 3 spot, winning 8-7 with a 7-2 tiebreaker.
The Gusties continued to dominate in the singles, winning all six efficiently. Yakimova,
Brooke Haddorff, and
Madison Packer all won perfect 6-0, 6-0 matches.
It was a near repeat performance against Bethany Lutheran just a few hours later, as the Gusties dominated the Vikings, 9-0, for the team's second win. The duos of
Mary Enright and Packer and Klemmensen and Poquette each won 8-0 in the doubles, while Laux and Haddorff picked up an 8-1 win at No. 1.
Emily Carlson,
Bethany Smith, and
Ashley Stroebel added to the perfect performances in the singles, as Stroebel won at No. 3, Smith at No. 4, and Carlson at No. 5 – all in perfect 6-0, 6-0 fashion.
Gustavus finished the perfect day, blanking Concordia 9-0 in the MIAC afternoon match. The teams of
Allison Szalay and
Molly Austin and De Bruijn and Smith both won 8-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to start the team's third match of the day. Laux and Haddorff won 8-3 at No. 3 to sweep the doubles.
Austin added another pair of 6-0 victories in the No. 2 doubles, while Szalay, Laux, De Bruijn, Yakimova, and Haddorff all cleaned up their singles matches in two sets/
The Gusties, now 7-2, will head to Virginia for the team's spring trip, where they will face a series of ranked opponents, starting with No. 29 Southwestern on March 24.
