FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Gustie women's tennis team opened up its spring trip in Virginia against a nationally-ranked opponent, falling 7-2 to No. 29 Southwestern University. The Gusties drop to 7-3 on the season, with a pair of nationally-ranked opponents up next on the docket.
The Gusties got their only wins of the day in the doubles, as the duo of
Kaya De Bruijn and
Bethany Smith won 8-4 in No. 2 doubles to lead off the match.
Alli Laux and
Pavla Yakimova followed up with an 8-6 win at the No. 3 doubles. Southwestern's Erika Synoski and Daryl Locke defeated
Allison Szalay and
Molly Austin 8-3 to keep the Gusties from sweeping the doubles competition.
The Pirates took all but one singles matches in two sets, as Szalay put up a fight in the No. 1 spot, before falling 6-4, 5-7, 10-12.
The Gusties are back in action tomorrow against No. 19 Case Western at 9 a.m. on the campus of Mary Washington.
