Softball Comes Up Empty on Day One of Florida Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Gustavus softball team began its spring break trip in Florida, facing Kalamazoo College and UW-Oshkosh on day one, coming up empty against both opponents. The Gusties drop to 4-8 on the season with the two losses - the first a 5-2 defeat against Kalamazoo, followed by a 7-0 shutout against the Titans.

Gustavus 2, Kalamazoo 5

The Gusties got their only runs of the day in game one against the Hornets. Kalamazoo opened up the scoring in the first inning, getting a run on a passed ball to take an early 1-0 lead. The Gusties responded in the second, as a KC error scored Lauren Lambert and Caitlin Olafsson, who both walked to start the inning.

The Hornets evened the score, 2-2 in the top of the fourth, scoring on an RBI double. Kalamazoo added three more in the sixth, on an RBI single, Gustie fielding error, and a passed ball, to end the game with a 5-2 advantage over the Gusties.

Kayla Herda picked up what turned out to be the only hit of the day, going 1-for-4 with a single in the third. Madi Mueller and Lambert each walked twice. Ava Hamsund was credited with the loss, allowing five runs off seven hits, only one of them earned, in seven innings pitched. Hamsund struck out five batters.

Gustavus 0, UW-Oshkosh 7

The Gusties were on the other end of an Oshkosh no-hitter in their second of the day, falling to the Titans 7-0. Oshkosh's Sydney Nemetz held the Gustie bats at bay all game, and had a perfect game until a walk in the seventh inning.

Maizie Anderson and Nemetz dueled through the first few innings, allowing only one combined hit until the bottom of the fourth. Oshkosh got on the board first, taking advantage of that one hit in the third, sending an RBI double to left center. A sacrifice fly scored another Titan run for a 2-0 lead.

Oshkosh turned up the heat in the bottom of the fourth, totaling five runs off four hits, including a 3-RBI double to right field. Both teams' bats went quiet after the high-scoring inning, ending the game with a final score of 7-0 in favor of the Titans.

Tiegen Richards spoiled the perfect game for Nemetz on a seventh-inning walk. Maizie Anderson got the start in the circle, allowing all five hits and seven runs in 3.2 innings pitched, before giving way to Megan Sherwood, who ended the game allowing two hits and striking out a batter.

The Gusties are back in action in Florida tomorrow, facing Union and Colby on day two.
