CLERMONT, Fla. — After a slow day at the plate the day before, the Gustavus softball team matched the Florida heat on day two, winning 16-6 over Union and 8-3 over Colby. The Guties improve to 6-8 on the season halfway through their spring break trip.
Gustavus 16, Union 6 (6 inn.)
The Gusties erupted for a season-high 20 hits in their Tuesday opener, scoring a run in all but one inning played.
Madi Mueller,
Olivia Guggenberger, and
Kayla Herda all got on base to open the game, getting a pair of singles from Mueller and Guggenberger and a walk for Herda. Mueller scored run one on a wild pitch to get the team on the board. Guggenberger added a run on a passed ball, before Herda took advantage of a Union error for a 3-0 lead. A
Carly Olson ground-out scored
Lauren Lambert for a 4-0 Gustie score at the end of the first.
Union responded with three of their own, scoring on a passed ball and two RBI singles. Unsatisfied with a one-run lead, Gustavus tacked on two more in the top of the second, as a single to second base from Herda scored Guggenberger and Mueller.
Gustavus reached double digits in the top of the third, scoring five on eight hits. After two quick outs, the Gusties got seven singles, three of them scoring runs, while Guggenberger stole home for the tenth of the game.
A
Lauren Lambert RBI single to right field added another for GAC in the fifth, before Union scored three on three hits, including a 2-run triple to right field.
The Gusties closed out the game with four runs off five hits in the sixth inning for the 16-6 final, tallying the team's most runs and RBI in a single game this year.
Meuller, Guggenberger, Herda, and Olafsson each tallied a trio of hits. Guggenberger and Herda led the way with three RBI apiece, while Mueller and Guggenberger ran in four runs each.
Ava Hamsund earned the win in the circle, allowing nine hits and striking out three batters in six innings of work.
Gustavus 8, Colby 3
The Gusties managed a total of 10 hits against the Mules, getting all eight of their runs in the first three innings.
Carly Olson opened the scoring, sending a single to left field to score
Madi Mueller, who walked to start the inning. A
Caitlin Olafsson single to right scored
Lauren Lambert before
Greta Dahlen sent Olafsson and Olson home on another right field single.
The hot start gave the Gusties a 4-0 lead heading into the second, which would've been enough for the win, but a pair of hits in the second extended the advantage to 7-0. A 2-RBI double to right field scored both Lambert and
Kayla Herda, while a single from Olafsson scored Olson in the next at-bat.
Colby got on the board in the third, scoring two on a double to right center before a single brought in their final run of the game.
The Gusties tacked on one more for good measure, scoring
Izzy Reuvers on an
Olivia Guggenberger sacrifice fly.
Olson finished game to 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and thre RBI. Olafsson and
Macy McNally each tallied a pair of hits as well.
Maizie Anderson got the win in the circle, allowing eight hits and striking out four batters.
The Gusties are back in action tomorrow morning, facing Colby once more before taking on No. 14 MIT.
