TUCSON, Ariz. - The Gustavus baseball team got back to its winning ways Wednesday with an eight-inning 14-4 win over Dakota Wesleyan. Despite leaving 10 runners on base, the Gusties had 14 hits and improved to 5-1 overall.Â
Dakota Wesleyan struck first with a bases loaded hit by pitch in the first, but the Gusties answered with three runs in the second.
Brady Schmitz scored on an error, while
Andrew Glovich and
Mitch Casperson each hit RBI doubles.Â
Dakota Wesleyan scored in the bottom half with a sac fly, but once again the Gusties had an answer with a run in the third as
Drake Siens scored on a wild pitch. Casperson gave the Gusties a 6-2 lead in the fourth with a two-run double.Â
Gustavus added two more in the fifth as Schmitz hit an RBI double followed by a run-scoring wild pitch.
Ross Hebel scored on an error in the sixth and
Gavin Baker hit a sac fly to make the score 10-2.
The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the sixth after an infield single plated a run, but the Gusties added four in the eighth.
Joe Burns had a bases-loaded walk,
Dylan Kopesky hit an RBI single, Casperson hit a sac fly, and
Bryce Novak drove in a run with an infield single.Â
Schmitz led at the plate, batting 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.
Chris Knowles also had a three-hit performance and scored a run.Â
Nick Hentges earned the win after making his first start of the season, Hentges went four innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits with five strikeouts.
Noah Meffert (2 IP, 2 H, ER),
Jacob Prosch (1 IP, 0 H, K), and
Hunter Sheehan (1 IP, 1 H, ER, 2 K) finsihed the game on the mound. Â
The Gusties play Howard Payne at 1 p.m. Thursday.Â
