WINONA, Minn. - The Gustavus baseball team Thursday suffered a decisive 13-2 loss in the game one, but rebounded with a 4-1 victory in the night cap to split a MIAC doubleheader at Saint Mary's. The Gusties move to 13-12 overall and 5-5 in the league.Â

A pair of throwing errors led to three runs for the home team in the third inning and the Cardinals never trailed. Saint Mary's added a pair of runs in the fourth and hit a solo homer in the fifth for a 6-0 lead. The game got out of hand in the sixth as the Cardinals tallied seven runs on six hits for a commanding 13-0 advantage.Â
After managing just one hit in five innings off Saint Mary's starter Eric Stomberg, the Gusties ended the shutout in the seventh with two runs.

Gavin Baker singled, and both scored on a single by
Danny Gavin.Â
Mitch Casperson suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs in five innings. He struck out six and gave up eight hits. Five different Gusties had one hit apiece.Â
Gustavus 4, Saint Mary's 1
Luke Siegle held the Cardinal batters in check, allowing just one run on three hits in six innings of work to pick up his fifth win of the season.Â
The Gusties took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as
Bryce Novak led off with a single and later scored on a passed ball.
Brady Schmitz, who reached on a double, scored on an error.Â
Saint Mary's scored its lone run in the second after a hit-by-pitch, fielder's choice, and wild pitch.Â
Gustavus regained a two-run lead in the third as
Gavin Baker scored on a fielding error.Â
The final run of the game came in the sixth as Gavin scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Schneider.Â
Jackson Thielen tossed two scoreless innings of relief but got into a jam in the ninth.
Adam Biewen then entered the game with two runners on and no outs, and was able to retire the Cardinals in order to pick up his first career save.Â
Novak led the Gusties at the plate, batting 3-for-5 with a double and a run.Â
Gustavus returns home Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader against Concordia.Â
