WHITEWATER, Wis. - In a match between two of the most prolific men's tennis teams in NCAA Division III history, Gustavus earned a convincing 5-0 win over Kalamazoo in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday. The Gusties improve to 23-7 overall and will face host UW-Whitewater at 3 p.m. Saturday with a trip to the region championship on the line.Â
The duo of
Caleb Fridinger and
Dominik Knutson gave the Gusties an early lead with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. The top tandem of
Gage Gohl and
Tyler Haddorff followed with an 8-3 win, while
Josh Christensen and
Marco Siviero completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 2.Â
The Nos. 5 and 6 singles spots pushed the Gusties over the edge as
Jack Bergmeyer won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and
Taona Mhwandagara won 6-1, 6-0.Â
The Gusties and Warhawks are set for their second matchup of the season tomorrow. UW-Whitewater won 5-4 on March 8 in Saint Peter.Â
