TEMPE, Ariz. — The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its 2024 Division III Scholar-Athletes and All-Academic Teams and the Gustavus women's team earned recognition. The Gustie women had 13 student-athletes earn Scholar-Athlete honors with the team garnering the All-Academic Team award. Seven athletes received the honor for the second year in a row, while
Alli Laux and
Emily Carlson led the team with the fourth selection of their careers.
Gustavus Women's Tennis Scholar-Athletes
Alli Laux (Sr., Onalaska, Wis.), the 2024 MIAC Chris Evert Award winner, added another academic accolade to her resume in her senior season. Laux picked up her fourth ITA Academic honor, was named MIAC Academic All-Conference for the third time, and was selected to the prestigious CSC Academic All-District Team for the second season in a row. Laux is an elementary education major.
Allison Szalay (So., Urbandale, Iowa) earned her second consecutive ITA honor. Szalay, a chemistry and physics major, was one of three Gustie sophomores selected to the CSC Academic All-District Team and an Academic All-MIAC selection.
Annie Klemmensen (Fy., Edina) earned the first ITA honor of her career in her first year as a Gustie.
Ashley Stroebel (So., Maplewood), an elementary education major, picked up her second ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition.
Brooke Haddorff (Jr., Eagan) earned her second ITA honor in her junior year. The public accounting major was also an Academic All-MIAC honoree.
Ella De Young (Fy., Iowa City, Iowa),
Sidney Wright (Fy., Edmonds, Wash.), and
Veranique Poquette (Fy., Champlin) joined fellow first-year Klemmensen on the ITA Academic Team in their first season of collegiate tennis.
Emily Carlson (Sr., Maple Grove) picked up her fourth ITA Scholar Athlete recognition. The history and mathematics major also wrapped up her Gustie career with her third MIAC Academic All-Conference selection, announced earlier this summer.
Kaya De Bruijn (So., Maasland, Netherlands), a geology and environmental studies major, earned her second selection to the ITA Academic Team. De Bruijn was also honored by the CSC and the MIAC for her academic accomplishments in her second collegiate season.
Madison Packer (So., Wadena), an exercise physiology major, was also one of seven to collect the second ITA honor of her career.
Mary Enright (Sr., Vadnais Heights), a Japanese studies major, concluded her Gustie career as an ITA Scholar for the second season in a row.
Pavla Yakimova (So., Glasgow, United Kingdom) capped off the Gustie honorees with her second ITA Scholar Athlete Award. Yakimova, a computer science and art studio major, was also named CSC Academic All-District and MIAC Academic All-Conference.
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and be listed on the institutional eligibility form. To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale), have all student-athletes included listed on the institutional eligibility form, and have all varsity letter winners factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.
The women's tennis team finished second in the conference with an overall record of 16-11 and MIAC mark of 9-1. The Gusties defeated three nationally ranked opponents throughout the season, and advanced to the MIAC Playoff Championship where they fell to No. 17 Carleton. The team earned 15 conference awards, highlighted by Chris Evert Award winner Laux, as well as four MIAC All-Conference selections.
